The Polarization Spiral
Adjust media fragmentation, echo chambers, and dialogue to watch societies spiral apart—or pull together.
Adjust the drivers
Community positions on the spectrum
How it works
The Polarization Spiral shows how three factors create feedback loops: when media is fragmented and algorithms amplify extreme views, people retreat into ideological bubbles. Without cross-community dialogue, stereotypes grow and trust erodes. As polarization deepens, people trust different sources of information, making dialogue harder. But when communities dialogue regularly, media diversity increases, algorithms can promote understanding, and the spiral can reverse.
Possible solutions
- Support independent journalism, regulate algorithms.
- Redesign recommendation systems to promote diverse views.
- Fund community dialogue programs and inter-community events.
